sleight of hand

i have chosen to combine the visual prompt from monday mural, on poefusion,, and the words offered by two for tuesdays in this poetic essay.

it began as a simple question,
“will you be a part of the problem
or a part of the solution?”
and while we were diligently
swearing our allegiance
to becoming a part of the solution
our freedom was
very stealthily usurped..
while we were dutifully recycling
minimizing, erasing, conserving,
modifying our destructive behaviors
in an effort to save the planet
while we were busy
reading the labels
on packaged foods
carefully screening
that which we put into our bodies
in effort to preserve
our youthful good health
while we were conveniently distracted
with tasks so overwhelming
that we were sure to remain
willingly occupied for quite some time…
we failed to notice
that those who we have entrusted
to do the research
to provide us with the truth
to be working hand in hand with us
to rectify the very real wrongs
that they in fact brought
to our attention
in the first place
have,, driven by their insatiable appetite
for power and money and control
chosen to feather their own nests
with our ignorance
use our unwillingness
or inability
to make decisions
based on common sense
as a double edged sword
with which they have dissected
from our lives
the very freedoms
on which this country
was founded,, in an effort to obtain….

once more i ask you,,

will you be part of the problem,, or stand up for what you know to be right and become a part of the solution???

if there is any doubt in your mind that we have allowed ourselves to be momentarily distracted,, and as a nation have fed into the annihilation of common sense,, i invite you to look again, at this email that has been circulating for sometime,, and i was fortunate enough to come across yet again on trailer park barbies site, tales from the trailer park….

and decide for yourself….

  1. Wow, quite a bit to digest here. I do like how your piece evokes all sorts of questions in the reader.

  2. “while we were busy
    reading the labels
    on packaged foods”

ha ha ha …I have to do that every day. I hate it.

As for being part of the problem or the solution, I am definitely part of the problem. I am too tired to work to be part of the solution. (and that is shitty of me, but thats the reality of my situation).

    ps…LOVE THE PHOTO.

  3. I couldn’t begin to list all the problems and possible solutions. I live by trying not to cause suffering for myself and others. A reactionary response to a situation can often cause more harm than no reaction at all, as your ideas show here.

  4. Whatever happened to the good ol times when someone could settle their own dispute and not worry about outside interference? I’m like Christine. I try not to make waves but, I won’t let someone run over me either. I couldn’t begin to fix today’s problems though. Society has evolved into something almost cruel and inhumane. Good write, Paisley. Have a nice day.

  5. Very strong write, beautifully structured with a perfect rhyme scheme.

  6. Yeah, the world is lame today.

  7. Amazing….this piece…and, of course…you…as always

  8. ‘a double edged sword
    with which they have dissected
    from our lives
    the very freedoms
    on which this country
was founded,, in an effort to obtain…’

I read this yesterday, before I’d written my response to the Monday Mural. Your poems are well worth a second read. I could have picked out many other good bits. It’s great that you are still fired up. I thought a Labour government was the answer to many of my own country’s evils.. how wrong I was…I’m now cynical, disillusioned and burnt out, particularly by the refusal to listen to the public on Iraq.

  9. I always try to be part of the solution. Regardless of wherever I am.

    signs of truth

  10. Wow. Quite a post. I agree with you about the way schools are run, though, knowing some teachers, I can tell you part of the problem is some of the parents.

  11. Perhaps just the sheer numbers of bloggers sharing their opinions will overwhelm and cause change – for in the past it seemed we had less venues both to write in and read from. I know I have seen some people grow as human beings, it is possible, but they had to be exposed to possibilities first.

Most of the examples are scary, but it is the last one, the hugs, that scares me the most… At one point I almost applied to work in an elementary school, but I am a hugger and had heard too many horror stories and I honestly wimped out.

  12. It’s ludicrous isn’t it, that the world should be the way it is now? I try to be part of the solution but it’s very difficult. I vacillate between feeling hopeful and despairing. Most of the time the problems appear insurmountable and then something good happens and I am motivated to try again, but it is a struggle and often, a thankless task.

  13. *bangs head on desk*

Why does it all have to be so frustrating??

    Great thought provoking piece.

    Heather

  14. I graduated in 1967 and that’s so true to life. My husband used to take his rifle to school with him after hunting early in the morning and leave it in the office so it would be handy for after school hunting. No one thought anything of it.

I’ve printed that email out and will use it for a discussion and possibly a writing prompt with my students. Thanks!
